Lejeune announces furlough-related closures and changes

CAMP LEJEUNE, NC (WWAY) — Camp Lejeune will soon start seeing the effects of impending furloughs of Department of Defense civilians. The changes impact everything from the Visitors Center to schools on base.

Between Monday and Sept. 21, civilians employees paid with appropriated funds, with few exceptions, will have to take one day of unpaid leave each week, for a total of 11 furlough days. First responders aboard the installation such as police, firefighters, emergency medical and dispatch service personnel are exempt from furloughs.

Camp Lejeune agencies have planned the following to accommodate the reduction in the civilian workforce during the furlough period:

-Defense Commissary Agency: Commissary closed Mondays.
-Naval Hospital Camp Lejeune: Pharmacy located at the Marine Corps Exchange closed Mondays
-Base Schools will be closed on the following dates: Sept. 3, 4, 9, 16 and 23.
-The Vehicle Registration Office at Bldg 60 will close from Monday to Sept. 30, 2013. To accommodate this closure, the Visitor Center (Bldg 818, near the Main Gate) will be extending the hours of decal issuance/vehicle registration and check in/out to 8 a.m. – 8 p.m., Monday through Friday.
-The Visitor’s Center at the Main Gate will reduce operating hours to Monday through Friday, 5 a.m. to 9 p.m., and on Saturday and Sunday, 7 a.m. – 7 p.m. DOD sponsors who have guests arriving after these posted times must meet their guests at the nearest gate and escort them. The sentry on duty will provide them with a one-day pass. Sponsors will need to register their guests’ vehicle at the visitor center during business hours the following day if they plan to remain on base beyond the one day pass limit.
-The ID Card Center will close at 4 p.m. on Monday, vice 6 p.m.
-Traffic Court will be closed on Fridays starting July 12.
-Legal Assistance Immigration Services closes at noon on Wednesdays, vice 3 p.m.

It is possible that additional customer and family services delays may also occur. Additionally, sequestration budgetary challenges have increased the costs of some services, including barber shops and certain seasonal swimming pools. The Marine Corps says the changes are subject to change based on future fiscal decisions made by the federal government.

On May 14, Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel announced the furloughs as a result of the federal budget sequestration that included a $37 billion dollar cut to the DOD budget for the current fiscal year. Letters were sent to civilian employees in June to inform them of the potential reduction in work and pay.
