Senate approves terminal groin restrictions
WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — State lawmakers want to put new restrictions on terminal groins, the rocky structures that slow down beach erosion.
A bill passed in the Senate today puts major restrictions on permanent terminal groins along the coast. Other regulations have to do with the maintenance of these structures.
New Hanover County Shore Protection Manager Layton Bedsole says taking small, scientific steps may not be a bad idea.
“I think it is prudent to take conservative steps in evaluating these structures,” Bedsole said. “It will be a new tool to be evaluated in coastal storm damage reduction in North Carolina.”
Terminal groins are designed to slow down beach erosion by keeping sand in one location longer.
Bedsole says these structures are still relatively new to North Carolina and should be tested.
