NC businessman accused of arranging sex with child
FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. (AP) – Detectives have arrested a Hope Mills businessman under a new state law and accused him of attempting to arrange to have sex with an autistic child.
The Cumberland County sheriff’s office said Friday that 47-year old William Jerry Faulkner Jr. is the first person in North Carolina charged under “Shaniya’s Law.” It addresses the unlawful sale, surrender or purchase of a minor. Faulkner is also charged with indecent liberties with a child.
A statement from the sheriff’s office said investigators found an illegal posting on Craigslist that sought a single mother with a special needs child to take the boy or girl to Faulkner in exchange for compensation. Investigators say Faulkner planned to have sex with the child.
Faulkner had been communicating with sheriff’s office detectives for the past several weeks.
