ONLY ON 3: Wilmington turns first profit on parking in five years

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — The City of Wilmington says it’s finally making money on parking. The city says its parking program turned a profit for the first time in five years.

The number of cars that parked in city lots and decks and at meters from January through June this year is down slightly from the same period last year, but revenue is up.

Last year council voted to change the 90-minute grace period in parking decks on 2nd Street and Market Street to 60 minutes. It also changed the deck fee for festival and event parking from five to seven dollars.

Leaders says they are also doing a better job of tracking who comes in and out of the downtown parking decks.

“We weren’t doing as good of job as we have done the past couple of years,” city spokeswoman Malissa Talbert said. “We really have been able to get a handle on when people park and if we are charging them fairly and consistently at the same time. We have put a couple of technological changes which have made it easier for our citizens to park.”

For the fiscal year that just ended, the city’s parking turned a profit of $376,140. Parking lost about a half-million dollars in fiscal year 2012.
