RALEIGH, NC (WWAY) — Kieran Shanahan is stepping down as Secretary of the North Carolina Department of Public Safety. In a news release, the governor’s office says the resignation is effective Wednesday.

“I have been honored to serve the governor and this great state and to have been a part of a great cabinet team,” Shanahan said in the release. “I am leaving the department stronger than when I took over in January.”

Yesterday, Gov. Pat McCrory accepted Shanahan’s resignation. Shanahan is resigning to concentrate on his law firm, other business obligations and to support his wife in her new capacity as Admiral in the US Navy, the governor’s office said.

“The department is stronger now than when Kieran started, and we appreciate his service,” Gov. McCrory said in a statement. “I will continue to value Kieran’s friendship. He has been an important part of the team. I clearly understand his decision and appreciate the priorities he needs to focus on. I would also like to congratulate Tina Shanahan on her recent promotion to Admiral in the US Navy. The US Navy’s gain is North Carolina’s loss. It is a well-deserved promotion and I congratulate her and wish the Shanahan family well.”

DPS will be managed by the executive team of Deputy Secretaries until the new secretary is named.
