AG Cooper says new laws could cost taxpayers millions

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Attorney General Roy Cooper says several potential new laws could cost taxpayers millions of dollars in legal fights.

Cooper spoke to the state’s Sheriffs’ Association Training Conference in Wilmington this morning. Afterward he told us bills, including new voting regulations and others, are “bad public policy” likely to draw challenges if the governor signs them into law.

“My office has defended and plans to continue to defend the state when it gets sued. That is the job of the attorney general,” Cooper said. “But it doesn’t stop my from commenting on the public policy, and we’ve had some bad public policy passed this session.”

Cooper says in addition to the voting rules, new abortion regulations, education cuts and the elimination of teacher tenure are also likely to lead to costly legal battles.
