Sewage overflow contained at Hewlett Creek pump station
A sewage overflow is contained at a pump station off pine grove drive in Wilmington.
A CFPUA spokesperson Mike McGill says it all started when the Hewlett Creek pump station lost power around 4 P.M. this afternoon. The overflow reached to at least two and a half feet high.
McGill says this is not the worst spill they’ve ever seen. But he is concerned the sewage might have leaked into nearby Hewlett Creek.
“We see some grey water in the waterway over here that we have to address and make sure where that comes from,” McGill said. “It’s not a direct route it appears, so we have to really take a look at what’s going on here.”
McGill says normally when they lose power, they are able to turn on generators to keep the station running. But he says something went wrong at the Hewlett Creek station, causing the leak.
