Alligator killed by officers after it ate 80-pound dog to go on display
JACKSONVILLE, NC (AP) — The 12-foot alligator killed by Jacksonville public safety officers after it ate an 80-pound Husky is being prepared for exhibit.
WNCT in Greenville reports that taxidermist Jim Williams said he’s keeping the alligator in a freezer at 10 degrees until he skins the hide next week. He said after skinning it, he will soak the hide in a preservative chemical and then attach it to a mold, a process which can take up to six months.
Eventually, the alligator will be displayed at the Onslow County Environmental Education Center and Library in Sneads Ferry, which is still under construction.
City officials said a woman was walking the Husky at dusk last month when it ran to the edge of the water where the alligator lived.
