ONLY ON 3: Veteran wants to reunite military ID bracelet with its owner

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — A New Hanover County veteran is searching for the owner of a military ID bracelet he found years ago.

“With a metal detector, there is no telling what you are going to find,” WWII veteran James Craft said.

About 10 years ago, Craft was walking through Hugh MacRae park when he found this a piece of a an ID bracelet.

“It is M slash S-G-T, which stands for Master Sergeant. It has his name: Glen C. Hewitt,” Craft said.

And there’s the service number RA34899606 on the back.

“That’s how they kept track of the people they had,” Craft said. “It is like your Social Security Number now.”

Craft has a similar ID bracelet from when he served in WWII. He says the bracelets are valuable, made from heavy silver, and an important piece of history. He wants to return the ID to its owner or his family.

“I’d love to have it back if I had lost it and know the story of how it got to where it was. How did it end up in the park?” Craft said.

But why did it take Craft so long to come forward? He said he was inspired by a StarNews story about a lost Purple Heart, but he needs some with the mystery he hasn’t been able to solve for years.

“I tried to get into some of their numbers, World War II records, and I was unable to,” he said. “Somebody with more abilities with the computer than I have could probably do it.”

After a quick search, we found a listing for Glen C. Hewitt, who was from Onslow County and injured while serving in the Army during the Korean War on Nov. 7, 1950. So far, though, we have not found any more up-to-date records for him.
