CFCC students react to Wave Transit route cuts

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Wave Transit held the first of two public hearings Wednesday on service reductions here in the Port City.

Wave wants to eliminate 3 routes including one that runs through the heart of downtown.

One of the routes on the chopping block is the 207, which transports students to Cape Fear Community Colleges North Campus on North College Road.

“Now they are going to snatch this bus out from under us. There are a lot of us that are depending on this bus,” said Shannon Dunn.

Dunn fought back tears at Wednesday’s public transit hearing. She says she moved to Wilmington to start her life over again and to attend cosmetology school.

“I ride first thing in the morning and I ride every afternoon. This bus is loaded with people,” said Dunn.

About a dozen people attended Wednesday’s meeting including Alexus Smith.

“I can only speak for the students. It’s going to hurt us a lot, because I don’t know how else I am supposed to get there,” said Smith.

Transit officials say the cuts are due to a lack of funding by the county.

“A lot of students depend on this bus to get all the way out to the north campus which is in Castle Hayne, which is a long way. If you don’t have a car or don’t have a way to go this is the only way to better yourself,” said Dunn.

If approved, the route reduction is tentatively scheduled for September 30th. There will be another public hearing Thursday at noon at Forden Station near Costco.
