BUILDING HISTORY: Saint Paul’s Lutheran church

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Saint Paul’s Lutheran Evangelical church has seen its share of ups and downs. Through good and bad times this tenacious group held on.

“On May 31, 1858 a group of German immigrants took a big step in faith to build a Lutheran church in Wilmington,” Pastor Misenheimer tells us.

It was a boom time for building in Wilmington.

“Now if you were walking down market St 1859-1860. between 5th and 6th street, you would have seen, St Paul’s, 1st Baptist and the Bellamy Mansion all under construction,” Misenheimer illustrates.

The good time would not last long, and St Paul’s dreams of a new church were stopped in their tracks.

“It was tough, the Civil War came as this church was almost completed, Union troops occupied this building and didn’t treat it very well, and most of the pews were burned for fire wood. We had to start over after the war completely,” Misenheimer said.

Crossing political borders, St Paul’s reached out to Lutherans in the north and their donations helped the church rebuild.

But St Paul’s Lutheran had the challenge of another war

“One challenge was this congregation of Germans had to circle the wagons, Germans were held in suspicion and it became a more closed society or culture at St Paul’s,” Misenheimer revealed

From wars and rebuilding, the church has always sprung back on faith and pastor Misenheimer feels the future is bright for this church on a mission.

“It’s God’s work and our hands and that’s the real beauty of it,” Misenheimer summarized.
Pastor Meisenhimer feels the best years are ahead for St Paul’s and they have plans to update church facilities.
