Wrightsville Beach drawbridge construction causes frustration for drivers

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — The Wrightsville Beach Aldermen held a special meeting to talk about the ongoing bridge work.

Residents and business owners living near Wrightsville Beach have complained about congestion on the bridge and on Thursday, officials from the Department of Transportation listened to their concerns.

Construction on the drawbridge has caused frustration and confusion for drivers in the Port City.

“I think folks have been a little frustrated, during the summer with some of the lane closures. It’s important to get the word out on where we are in the process,” said Tim Owens, Town Manager.

Most of the people who attended Thursday’s public meeting were concerned with the lack of communication in regards to the construction project.

“I feel like the communication is pretty good. Sometimes there can’t be communication because it is really in the contractors hand and they are doing the work, but we are trying to do the best we can,” said Owens.

Tom Thompson came to the meeting with not only questions, but solutions.

“I mentioned that they should ask the bridge tender, the person who opens and closes the bridge to post on twitter, tweets that would advise residents as to when the bridge is going to open and close,” said Thompson.

Also at Thursday’s meeting, the Wrightsville Beach Chamber of Commerce Chair suggested building a high rise bridge in the future.

Construction on the drawbridge began in February 2012 and is scheduled to be completed in March.

Traffic is limited to one lane overnights Monday through Thursday.
