CAROLINA BEACH, NC (WWAY) — Police are working to identify a man who they say turtle patrol found dead in the surf on Carolina Beach early Friday morning.

Around 6:30 a.m., police say they responded to a call about a man who was unresponsive on the beach near the 400 block of Carolina Beach Avenue.

A member of the Carolina Beach Sea Turtle Project found the body, described as a white male, about 35 years old.

This morning Police Chief Harry Humphries told WWAY it appears the man suffered a gunshot wound, but it was not clear if the wound was self-inflicted. Later police would only say the man had suffered head trauma, and investigators did not know how he died.

Stay with WWAY for more information as the story develops.
