Man arrested at scene of crash after van hit bicyclist in Wilmington
WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Traffic in Wilmington is returning to normal for drivers on their morning commute after a car crash sent at least one person to the hospital early Tuesday.
Dispatchers say the call came in just before 7:30 a.m. Witnesses on the scene say a man driving a van hit a bicyclist at the intersection of Dawson and 5th Streets.
When WWAY got to the scene, a man was being handcuffed and put into a police cruiser. Witnesses tell WWAY the man in cuffs was behind the wheel at the time of the crash.
Police and traffic units responded to the scene to help direct traffic after they shut down two lanes on Dawson Street, and completely closed down the block of 5th Street from Dawson to Wooster. The investigation at the scene of the wreck also caused some traffic congestion for drivers coming over the Isabel Holmes Bridge.
There's no word yet on the condition of the bicyclist, who dispatchers say was transported to the hospital from the scene.
