BUILDING HISTORY: A. David building
WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Some buildings are old and some modern, this one is a little of each.
The A. David building downtown is certainly historic; it has undergone quite a few changes in 100 years to become the place it is now.
“That is what drew us to the space. we wanted to try to reclaim a historic building and create a modern use for it.” Said Clark Hipp, one of the owners.
Clark Hipp was ready for the job, he runs a modern architecture business and is experienced in the materials and planning needed to bring a building from one century into another.
There were some surprises, good ones.
‘When we purchased the building the last major renovation had been in the 70’s. through investigation we found the original tin ceilings a lot of exposed systems and duct work and we realty tried to bring a modern view to a historic place.” Hipp said.
That’s what it is a building with solid historic heart but modern amenities. it would do its builder proud.
“This is called the A. David building after the founder and builder of the building Abraham David, he began business in 1896 and built this building in 1908 to put his business in.” Cark told us.
One distinction of the building is the bright stained glass on the lower level, it adds a lot of color even on a rainy day.
“Downstairs we have the A. David executive suites it’s a group of offices that have shared amenities, there are various companies. Our reception area utilizes reclaimed wood from an old tobacco barn for the floor and some of the walls have river wood from the Cape Fear River. Again, trying to bring the history back into the building.” Clark revealed.
At 228 Front Street, the A David building is a great example of bringing a building from the past into the future and giving the city the best of both worlds.
