Family owned vineyard offers free ‘Grapes to Glass’ winemaking class

AUTRYVILLE, NC (NEWS RELEASE) — For more than a decade Jesse & Frances Bullard have been growing a piece of North Carolina history, muscadine grapes. Nine years ago the vineyard at Quarter-Shy Farm was open to the public giving people the opportunity to pick their own grapes.

Today, Old Oak Vineyard at Quarter-Shy Farm is a family affair with daughter Jessica Bullard Swencki and husband, Akira working in partnership to help support the seasonal five-acre operation.

This Friday the vineyard will open for its 10th season and as an added bonus to old and new customers, the family is offering a free home winemaking class each Saturday during harvest at 10:00 a.m.

Jessica Swencki, graduate from the James Sprunt Community College Viticulture and Enology certificate program says the “Grapes to Glass” winemaking class is a needed addition to a day at the vineyard.

“We love interacting with our customers and realized many are picking grapes to experiment with home winemaking,” she said. “We are happy to offer an opportunity for individuals interested in seeing the process from start to finish and learning about tools and tips based on our family’s experiences.”

Swencki says individuals in the class can expect a hands-on experience and will leave with an informational step-by-step reference document.

The vineyard is open 8 a.m.-6 p.m. every Friday and Saturday through the harvest season and will also be open Labor Day.

For additional information about vineyard operations or the “Grapes to Glass” winemaking class contact Jessica Swencki at (910) 524-7020 or at oldoakvineyard@gmail.com.
