Firefighters fill their boots for a good cause
WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — New Hanover County Fire Rescue filled their boots at several locations beginning Friday in an effort to raise money for the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA).
Firefighters near the Harris Teeter off Carolina Beach Road stood outside the store and collected money in their work boots from cars passing through. They said the goal is to beat the $51,000 they raised last year for the MDA.
“Muscular dystrophy affects people everywhere. There is not an area in the country that is not affected by muscular dystrophy somehow,” said New Hanover County Fire Rescue Lt. Ben Bobzien. “We have many local families here in the Cape Fear area that our office supports. We are just helping support those families.”
Muscular dystrophy degenerates the muscles in a person’s body over a period of time. For more than 50 years, fire services nationwide have helped fight this disease by backing the MDA through similar fundraisers.
So far, the New Hanover County Fire Rescue raised about $14,000. Firefighters hope to more than triple that amount by Sunday.
