ONLY ON 3: Family who lost home in fire could lose temporary shelter

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — A family whose home went up in flames on Friday says they could now be put out on the street because the organization that came to their aid can’t help any longer.

“The Red Cross came and they put us up into sleep inn until today and we have nowhere else to go,” said Connie Arnold.

Tuesday morning the Arnold’s say that they were notified by the Red Cross that they would no longer pay hotel rooms for the family of nine.

“It’s pretty scary not knowing where you’re going to lay your head at night,” said Michael Arnold. “It’s not just me but mainly my kids, because that’s our world is our kids, and we’re trying to keep them in a stable place.”

“The Red Cross gave us numbers for the United Way to contact and you call them and they give you these numbers to another contact and they say they have no funds,” said Connie Arnold.

According to a Red Cross spokesman says that they are still helping the Arnolds get back on their feet, but it’s up to the family how quickly they find a new place.

“One of the services we offer is first month’s rent and security deposit,” said Red Cross spokeswoman Autumn Mihm. “It’s up to the clients to find the place that they want to live in and help with that paperwork and we can arrange for that as well.”

Still the Arnold’s maintain that the short term future isn’t very bright.

“We will be sleeping in our vehicles until we can find a place,” said Connie Arnold. “We have nowhere else to go.”
