Panel scrutinizes NC lottery subscription service

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) – North Carolina Education Lottery leaders are defending a new program that will let players purchase tickets for three jackpot games by subscription through its website after a retailers’ group warned it could hurt store sales and tax revenues.

Lottery Executive Director Alice Garland addressed Wednesday the legislature’s Lottery Oversight Committee to talk about the initiative beginning in November. People at North Carolina computer terminals will be able to purchase a minimum of two weeks’ worth of tickets through the program.

Elizabeth Dalton Robinson with the North Carolina Retail Merchants Association says the program can’t help but decrease sales of tickets and other items for brick-and-mortar retailers.

Garland disagrees, saying the program will focus on a certain kind of customer. Subscribers won’t be able to spend more than $70 per week.
