NC looks for jobless rate move as economy putters

RALEIGH, NC (AP) — North Carolina workers are looking for news about the unemployment rate’s latest move, even as the measure of joblessness loses some of its meaning.

The state Commerce Department on Friday releases the unemployment rate for August.

July’s jobless rate increased slightly to 8.9 percent as cuts in the overall government workforce tempered private-sector employment gains. The higher jobless rate was the first month-to-month increase since January.

The national unemployment rate is now 7.3 percent, down from a peak of 10 percent during the recession and falling steadily.

The trend of falling unemployment rates has come in large part for a discouraging reason as more people stop looking for work. Once people without a job stop looking a job, the government no longer counts them as unemployed.
