Wilmington Red Cross worker heading to Canada to help with flood relief

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — More Red Cross volunteers are going to flooded areas.

Victoria Kling, the Regional Response Manager for the Eastern NC Region of the American Red Cross, will head to Alberta, Canada, where record floods ravaged the area this summer and forced 90,000 to leave Calgary, High River, Medicine Hat and Drumheller.

Kling said she will help coordinate the continued recovery effort there. She’s helped after several disasters across the country including Hurricane Katrina and Superstorm Sandy.

She said every little bit of assistance she can give helps victims immensely.

“It’s a very intimate, personal space when you’re helping someone who’s just lost everything. And, you know, the support, the compassion, the aid that we’re able to provide sometimes really makes the difference for someone to just be able to have a little bit of that breathing space,” Kling said.

Kling will focus on working with key government agency partners, several tribal nations, and some community partners to get feedback on the operation.

Kling isn’t the only Red Cross volunteer offering flood relief help. Chuck Thurlow is in Colorado right now figuring out where to send help first after flooding devastated the areas around Boulder.
