Leland PD: Officer cited for DWI had head injury
LELAND, NC (WWAY) — Leland Police say an officer cited for DWI Saturday in Pender County had recently suffered a head injury.
Highway Patrol cited Ryan O’Connor after a Pender County Sheriff’s deputy pulled him over around 8:40 a.m. Saturday. Investigators tell WWAY other drivers called New Hanover County 911 after seeing a pick-up truck driving recklessly on I-40 North. A Pender County deputy pulled O’Connor over, but handed the case over to Highway Patrol, according to Pender County Sheriff’s Capt. Jamie Ezzell.
Leland Police spokesman Sgt. Davis McGowan said O’Connor has been diagnosed with a head injury and possible concussion suffered when he fell and hit his head on duty late Thursday or early Friday. McGowan says O’Connor has filed a workers compensation claim.
McGowan says an internal investigation is underway. He said O’Connor is scheduled for a MRI later this week.
