Cease fire over, shots fired continue

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — It has been three months since community leaders and Wilmington Police joined forces to call for a cease fire after a rash of shootings and gang violence in the Port City.

Now three men are behind bars for one of four shootings that happened over the weekend.

The latest string of shootings began Friday morning, as the 90-day cease fire came to an end. Police say a little after 11 a.m. officers were called to the Exxon at S. 3rd and Dawson streets for reports of shots fired. Police say one shot was fired, and two men jumped into separate cars.

Saturday officers responded to shots fired in the Creekwood community. When they arrived they found no victims, but witnesses said there were six to eight shots fired from a newer model black Cadillac.

Just 45 minutes later, officers found a car matching that description and chased the suspects for four minutes before ending up at the 1200 block of S. 6th St., where three or four suspects ran from the car and got away.

Sunday police were called to yet another shooting in Creekwood. This time, there were two victims: a woman shot in the arm and a man shot in the foot. A truck was hit in the crossfire. Police arrested Harold Leonard, Shaquan Palmer and Montrell Jones in connection with that shooting.

Finally, Sunday night police reported more shots in Creekwood. While searching for suspects, officers found Jason Batts laying on two rifles. They arrested him on two outstanding warrants. They have also charged him in connection with the shooting. One home was hit by the gunfire, but police say no one was hurt.

Creekwood residents refused to speak with us out of fear. They say they want to stay alive, and talking to us could put them in harm’s way.
