Wilmington Housing Authority responds to shootings

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — According to Wilmington Housing Authority’s website, their mission is to provide residents with a safe and affordable home. But after a string of shootings in Creekwood over the past several days, safety seems to be in question.

“I was there,” said WDA’s commission chair Jeff Hovis. “We are not blind to what is going on.”

WHA wants to provide an environment where people can get on their feet and move forward, but board Hovis says the lack of cooperation among residents makes that difficult. The authority contracts 6 Wilmington police officers to monitor its complexes, including Creekwood. But Hovis says non-residents are usually the trouble-makers. He says residents need to speak up.

“People are seeing dangerous activity, and they are not reporting it to the police,” said Hovis. That is the worst thing they can do. We want to try to provide safety, but we can’t guarantee it.”

WHA wants residents to know there are ways to communicate tips anonymously. Just text tip 708 followed by your message to CRIMES (274637). Name and numbers are stripped before being forwarded to the police.

WHA is planning a meeting with the board and Creekwood residents this week to discuss options.
