WPD spokeswoman refuses to let detective discuss string of restaurant robberies

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — A Wilmington Police spokeswoman refuses to let an investigator talk to WWAY about a recent string of robberies targeting fast food restaurants at the end of their night.

It happened again last night. Two armed men forced some employees at Domino’s Pizza on Carolina Beach Road to hand over their cash at the end of the evening.

Over the past few weeks it’s also happened at the Pizza Hut on Oleander, the IHOP at Market and College, the Burger King on 17th Street and the Pizza Hut in Leland.

Reports say the suspects sometimes wear blue bandanas. It’s a sign that they could be part of a Cryps gang. Last night police say the robbers were wearing red bandanas, which may be a sign you are a member of the Bloods gang.

We called Wilmington Police spokeswoman Linda Rawley this morning to ask if we could talk with someone investigating the robberies. She told us, “It’s probably not going to happen” because she said investigators were too busy. Later, she did give us the number of a detective working on the case. He called back and agreed to talk, but when our reporter went to WPD headquarters, Rawley refused to let us talk to him because she was upset about the original version of this story, which questioned her willingness to work with us to get information about the robberies.

Police have not said if the robberies are connected to a string of violence in Wilmington the last few months.

Late last week Chief Ralph Evangelous held a news conference to discuss the end of a 90-day cease fire in the city that failed to stop shootings around Wilmington. While the news conference was going on, a man shot at another man just a few blocks away from City Hall at the Exxon at 3rd and Dawson streets.

Over the weekend, four men were arrested for various shootings in the Creekwood community.
