Registered sex offender convicted for violation
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. (AP) – A registered sex offender has pleaded guilty to violating state law by working as a youth minister at a Winston-Salem church and taking children to a city recreation center.
The Winston-Salem Journal reports (http://bit.ly/1c1h0xF) 53-year-old Steven Lennard Johnson pleaded guilty in Forsyth Superior Court on Monday to sex offender employment violation and sex offender child premises.
Johnson is married to the daughter of the church’s pastor, but the pastor said neither he nor his daughter knew about Johnson’s criminal background.
Prosecutors said Johnson volunteered as a youth minister at the church from July 2012 to last February, and supervised children and took them to play basketball. Officials said there were no allegations that he sexually abused the children under his care.
