Business blossoms on Valentine’s Day

Julia’s Florist shop in Wilmington has been bustling for weeks leading up to the day dedicated to love.

“We had four thousand roses delivered and 3500 various other flowers and that was just from one supplier,” said owner Jeff Cook.

For a florist, you can consider Valentine’s Day the biggest day of the year; it is the day their business blossoms.

“This is when we do what we do best, and we really try to get out to the public what it is that we offer,” said Dana Cook.

To get through the day smoothly, Julia’s needs an all hands on deck approach. Everyone has a task from creating arrangements to mapping out the best way to get them to the lucky recipient.

Jeff Cook explained, “I’m taking calls right now and I’ve been having to tell them that we just can’t take anymore. We had over two hundred yesterday and over two hundred today. Hopefully we can get all of those done, we have six vehicles out making deliveries.”

For many, remembering the day and finding ways to show that special someone you care is hard enough, but for customer Howard Hosmer, who has been married for 64 years, Valentine’s Day means double the purchase. “My wife has valentine’s day and a birthday on the sixteenth so it’s only two days apart so I’m getting two pieces.”

According to reports, the average U.S. consumer is expected to spend $103 on Valentine’s Day gifts, meals, and entertainment; that figure is down from $123 in 2008.
