Black History lesson proves out of this world

Body

Each day this month middle school students from around our area have shared with us stories of famous African-Americans as part of Black History Month. But when West Pender Middle School student Fred White was assigned to research the first black astronaut, he wound up with a truly out-of-this-world experience.

Fred’s teacher managed to track down Dr. Guion Bluford, who agreed to do a phone interview with Fred. Fred says it he was a bit nervous, but it was exciting to talk with his research subject.

“It’s more interactive, and it gives you more knowledge of what they’re like and what the project’s like,” Fred said.

Fred said if he has the chance to research someone living again, he’d like to talk to them one-on-one.

His report on Dr. Bluford will air next week on WWAY NewsChannel3 and be posted here on our website. In the meantime you can watch Fred’s complete interview with Dr. Bluford by clicking on the video link at the top of this story.
