NC crime lab forensic advisory board to meet

GARY D. ROBERTSON

RALEIGH, NC (AP) — The head of a scientific advisory panel established to help improve North Carolina’s state crime laboratory following a stinging audit three years ago says forensic upgrades are a continual process.

Retired Virginia crime lab director Peter Marone has led the Forensic Science Advisory Board since it was created. The panel of experts held its quarterly meeting Tuesday at the Raleigh lab.

Marone said the crime lab has done everything that’s been asked of it by state lawmakers. But Marone said recruiting and retaining new qualified lab workers can be difficult and time consuming.

The crime laboratory audit followed the release of a once-convicted murderer and called for the thorough examination of 190 criminal cases with similar blood testing issues. The audit covered cases between 1987 to 2003.
