BUILDING HISTORY: Hughes Brothers Tires
WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — A business started in the 20’s and a landmark built in the 30’s, it is still run by a man who loves to keep people rolling.
”Been in the tire business for about 41 years.” John Allen says.
John is the owner now, but his name isn’t Hughes.
”The Hughes brothers founded this business in 1921. It’s the oldest existing tire dealership in North Carolina.” Allen says proudly.
The trademark for this tire dealer on Market is the prominent cover in front of the business. It’s hard to miss.
”The reason it’s so high is, back in 1935 when this building was finished there was no height limit on trailers. So they wanted anything that came down highway 17 to be able to pull in.” Allen explained.
The tire business has changed since the Hughes brothers started the business in the 1920’s.
”Lot simpler than it is now, probably a hand full of sizes. Now we have over 4 thousand sizes of passenger and light truck tires to choose from.” Allen told us.
The business has changed but you don’t have to look far to see signs of the past. John has continued a good business and he is quick to share the credit.
”The main thing is we have a lot of employees that have been here a long time. I have been here 33 years and I have a couple of people that have been here longer than I have.” Allen said.
The Hughes Brothers knew what they were doing in business, John is pretty good too.
”I’ve been here since 1980 and when you come in to something good you don’t change the name on it.” Allen summarized.
