NC audit: 1 in 5 pharmacies uninspected in years

RALEIGH, NC (AP) — A state audit says North Carolina pharmacy regulators did not inspect a fifth of the state’s 2,700 drug stores in six years or more, a condition that risked discovering mistakes like dispensing the wrong medication or shorting prescriptions.

State Auditor Beth Wood’s office said Thursday the North Carolina Board of Pharmacy’s seven-person inspection team and lack of deadlines for site inspections meant more than a third of the state’s pharmacies were not checked for four years or more.

The pharmacy regulator says it acts on complaints and concentrates on about 300 inspections a year where there may be a problem. It says routine inspections get a lower priority.

The pharmacy board says because of the audit it has gotten away from tracking on paper which pharmacies have gotten routine inspections.
