Officers fired in SHP DWI case win reinstatement

RALEIGH, NC (AP) — Two of the three North Carolina law officers fired in 2010 for not charging an off-duty state trooper suspected of drunken driving have won appeals to get their jobs back. The trooper involved has won reinstatement.

The News & Observer of Raleigh reported Thursday that the court cases against the officers crumbled because the state was unable to prove Highway Patrol Capt. James Williams Jr. was intoxicated.

The Butner Public Safety officer who pulled over Williams’ swerving Mustang did not administer any breathalyzer or sobriety tests to the trooper. Instead, Williams was taken to a nearby hotel.

Williams rejoined the patrol last month with $37,500 in back pay. Two former Butner officers also won their appeals.

Former Butner Lt. Daniel Parrott lost his case after lying to investigators.
