Activists want NC Medicaid expansion reconsidered
RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) – Democratic lawmakers and liberal-leaning advocacy groups want Gov. Pat McCrory to reconsider his decision this year not to expand Medicaid to more low-income individuals using the federal health care overhaul.
They held a news conference Monday in front of the Legislative Building and said they want McCrory to call lawmakers back to Raleigh to initiate the expansion to hundreds of thousands of people.
Sen. Mike Woodward of Durham says the decision was short-sighted and is hurting North Carolina’s uninsured and hospitals. Woodward says other states are taking advantage of a federal injection of money by expanding Medicaid.
Senate leader Phil Berger and House Speaker Thom Tillis say the advocates should be in Washington protesting the overhaul law if they are serious about wanting to reduce health care costs.
