Man criticizes WPD response after hit and run

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — A Wilmington man who was the victim of a hit and run is upset over a series of events that took place after his accident.

On September 20th an 18 year old girl backed into his car at a stoplight on Carolina Beach Road.

He immediately pulled over and called 911, but while he was on the phone with dispatch the girl who hit him drove off.

Carlton James says that it took a civilian crash investigator more than an hour to get to the scene of his accident.

Once they got there they filled out an accident report if he got any information about the girl who crashed into him.

Two weeks later James says he called police with the girl’s license plate number, but never got a response.

“We’re all taxed,” said Carlton James. “Our taxes helps pay for the law enforcement salary. I’m upset, frustrated and confused, because I’m trying to understand why there hasn’t been anything handled about it.”

Wilmington Police Department spokeswoman Linda Rawley says it’s common for civilian crash investigators instead of cops to respond to accidents

She says she is reaching out to James to try and get the situation cleared up.
