Candidate profile: Charlie Rivenbark

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Wilmington City Councilman Charlie Rivenbark landed in the hospital last week, but he is out and back on the campaign trail this week.

Now he is asking for your vote for what he says could be the last time so he can keep his seat on the city council.

Rivenbark is a fifth generation Wilmingtonian.

“It’s just a great town. I love it,” he said. “I ride around, and I see all the places I’ve seen since I was a kid.”

As he watches areas around the city urbanize, Rivenbark says leaders need to reevaluate ways to expand.

“We are going to have to rethink the way we grow our tax base; the way we develop our land,” Rivenbark said. “We need to go back and practice smart growth.”

Rivenbark, who served two terms on council starting in 1993 before taking a break and running again four years ago, says there is a growing number of people in the market for senior housing in Wilmington. It’s an issue he feels the city needs to address.

“Wwe are woefully behind, and we need to really hit the ground running with that type of housing, as well as affordable housing for people who are on subsidized housing,” Rivenbark said.

Reflecting on his current term as it comes to a close, Rivenbark says he is particularly proud of how council acted during difficult financial times.

“We continue to provide the services and maintain a fairly reasonable tax rate, grew the city’s savings account during those tough economic times,” he said.

And now Rivenbark is asking for your vote to continue his work on council.

“I think the City of Wilmington is in excellent shape,” Rivenbark said. “Can we do better? We can always do better.”

Early voting is underway and runs through Saturday. Election Day is Tuesday.
