Crews investigate possible plane crash near Willard
PENDER COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — Crews in Pender County are investigating a possible plane crash near Willard.
Pender County Emergency Management Director Tom Collins tells WWAY dispatch reported an Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacon, or EPIRB, alert. Collins says based on the information he has received, they are looking for a single-engine plane that took off from Jacksonville’s Albert Ellis Airport heading for Michigan, according to a flight plan. Collins says he has received reports that the plane went off radar some time yesterday.
Collins says a military aircraft is on its way from Seymour Johnson Air Force Base in Goldsboro to try to locate the EPIRB signal and the aircraft before crews head into the woods. He says it’s unclear whether the signal is coming from Pender County or Duplin County.
Collins says they have set up a command post on Crooked Run Road in Willard.
WWAY NewsChannel 3 has a crew on the way to the scene and will provide more updates as they become available.
