Crews narrow search area for missing plane

DUPLIN COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — Duplin County emergency crews are searching roughly a half mile area to try and narrow down the location that a single engine plane may have crashed on Sunday.

Duplin County Emergency Manager Reid Sutherland says that just after 3 p.m. Monday his office was notified by the North Carolina Highway Patrol that there was a downed aircraft near Kenansville.

Sutherland says that air and ground crews have located an emergency locator transmission and are currently working to pinpoint its exact location which they believe to be in a heavily wooded swamp to the north of the Duplin County Airport.

Crews in Pender County stopped their search for the plane around 5 p.m. Monday.

Officials say the plane left from Albert Ellis Airport in Jacksonville Sunday morning and was headed to Michigan.

Crews tried to pinpoint a signal given off by an emergency locator beacon, which was picked up by satellites.

Investigators say the satellites that receive the signal are not completely accurate. They said they also had hits in Duplin County and one near Mount Olive.

Officials have not released the pilot’s name, but they say he is in the military and his family has been notified.
