Ex-NC sheriff’s workers face embezzlement charges

GREENVILLE, N.C. (AP) – Two former Pitt County Sheriff’s Office workers are accused by authorities of taking money paid to the county for gun permits and other civil services.

The Daily Reflector of Greenville reports (http://bit.ly/HZQacC) 60-year-old Evon Garris of Ayden and 40-year-old Melissa Peaden of Winterville turned themselves in at the Pitt County Detention Center Tuesday after warrants for their arrest were issued last week.

The women were indicted on Nov. 12 by a grand jury. Garris is charged with 14 counts of embezzlement, and Peaden is charged with 12 counts.

According to a news release, an investigation began several months ago when the sheriff’s office discovered discrepancies in the civil processing receipts. A State Bureau of Investigation probe determined that two employees had “systematically taken money” received for civil services.
