FIRST ON 3: Chadbourn Chief: ‘I haven’t quit’

CHADBOURN, NC (WWAY) — Chadbourn’s police chief says he has not quit his job despite reports to the contrary.

Steven Shaw says with a new town council coming in, he understands if he’s no longer wanted, but that the town has not yet accepted the terms he gave for his resignation nor has he signed an agreement.

“I have done nothing that would be reason to resign or be fired,” Shaw told WWAY in a phone interview this afternoon. “I have given them terms that I would accept.”

Just a few minutes before our conversation with Shaw, Town Manager Stevie Cox told WWAY Shaw had resigned “to pursue other opportunities.” Cox said the town had planned a formal announcement next week that Shaw would work until the end of December.

Cox says in the meantime, Shaw is staying on to do administrative work, while Capt. Bob Mumblow, who Cox says was Chadbourn’s chief about a decade ago, is now handling the day-to-day operations of the police department.

Shaw says as captain, Mumblow routinely handles day-to-day duties as Shaw catches up on administrative work. Shaw says right now he is still police chief.

All this comes weeks after Shaw damaged his town car by reportedly backing into a bush. He says afterward, Cox, his boss, told Shaw he did not have to take a drug test as is required under town policy, but Shaw says Mayor Fax Rector is trying to make an issue of it.

Rector has not yet returned a call for comment.
