Whats Happening: February 27 – March 1



Anderson Elementary School is holding it’s first Womanless Beauty Pageant Friday night, featuring male staff members. The school’s Relay for Life team is hosting the pageant. It begins at 7:00 p.m.

It is not spring yet, but Azalea Festival activities are already underway. Saturday night, it is the Azalea Princess Pageant. It starts at 7:30 p.m. at UNCW’s Kenan Auditorium. Tickets are ten dollars.

Mount Calvary Baptist Church in Wilmington will offer free health screenings this weekend. The event is for men with minimal or no health insurance. Screenings include blood pressure, cholesterol and HIV testing among others. The event is Saturday from 8:00 a.m. until noon. Mount Calvary Missionary Baptist Church is located at 812 Harnett Street in Wilmington.

Rock and roll inside a high school usually does not mix, but Saturday, a rock-a-thon takes place at Laney. The event raises money for the Civitan International Research Center. You can enjoy food, games, and of course music. It runs from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

Speaking of music, recording artist Edwin McCain will fill your heart with song when he appears at the 2009 Cape Fear Heart Ball. It takes place at the Coastline Conference and Event Center Saturday night. For $150 dollars you get dinner, dancing and a silent and live auction. What more could you ask for? It begins at 6:00 p.m. For tickets, call 910-794-5507.

On Sunday, take advantage of where you live and save some valuable money. It is the 14th Annual Be a Tourist in Your Own Hometown Day. More than thirty local attractions, like the battleship Bellamy Mansion and Airlie Gardens will be free to the public. Only a few select events are free for New Hanover County residents only. Times vary according to each attraction.

Also Sunday, it is the Second Annual A Taste of Southport. The event celebrates the diversity of food, with area restaurants showcasing their cuisine. It runs from 2:00 p.m. until 5:00 p.m. at the Southport Community Building. Tickets are $25, numbers are limited. For more information, call the Southport Visitors Center at 457-7927.
