Commerce Secretary wraps up statewide listening tour in Wilmington

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — North Carolina’s Commerce Secretary was in town today, as she continues a listening tour.

Secretary Sharon Decker is traveling the state so she can hear first-hand from business owners and economic development professionals. Today marked the last stop of the statewide “listening tour” for Decker.

Decker was joined by one of Gov. Pat McCrory’s senior advisors. The two discussed jobs and the economy and hosted an open forum to hear from stakeholders on economic development needs in our state.

“I’m hearing a lot of questions around how do we create jobs? What do we do? How do we help existing businesses grow? How do we create new business to the area?” Decker said. “One of the questions I am asking is what do we need to do to stimulate more business development? How do we get small business started?”

One local economic development consultant in our area says she thinks the Port City is moving in the right direction.

“One of the things we’ve seen in the statistics is that urbanization has taken hold, and certainly in this region, Wilmington is the most significant urban area, and there are a lot of people that want to move here for a lot of different reasons,” Robin Spinks said.

Spinks says as people come here with their skills, businesses will then follow.

Secretary Decker says she believes our area is sitting on the cusp of significant growth because of our close proximity to the port.

The information from the listening tour events will be compiled and reviewed for a new 10-year strategic plan being created by Decker and the North Carolina Economic Development Board.
