‘I-40 Challenge’ ends with no deaths on interstate

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — The North Carolina Highway Patrol says an effort to make I-40 safer from coast to coast during Thanksgiving ended with no deaths on the interstate, which stretches more than 2,500 miles from Wilmington to Barstow, CA.

Law enforcement in eight states took part in the “I-40 Challenge” Wednesday and Sunday, which are two of the busiest travel days of the year. Highway Patrol says in support of the More Cops, More Stops campaign, there was a significant increase in troopers assigned to I-40, ticketing or arresting offenders caught speeding, driving while impaired, failing to wear seat belts and other traffic violations.

Highway Patrol says no one died in crashes on I-40 Wednesday or Sunday.

“Data shows us that during the Thanksgiving holiday period, most motorists travel on the Wednesday before and the Sunday after Thanksgiving,” NC Highway Patrol spokesman 1st Sgt. Jeff Gordon said. “The surge of traffic increases your chances of being involved in a collision. To reduce those chances, we decided to partner with law enforcement agencies from across the country in the hopes of reducing the number of I-40 traffic tragedies.”

The two-day special enforcement period (12 p.m.-12 a.m., Wednesday, and 9 a.m.-9 p.m., Sunday) resulted in the following:
