Bald Head Island ferry moved off sandbar; captain not on schedule
BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — Crews have successfully recovered the Bald Head Island ferry that ran aground on a sandbar off Southport Tuesday.
Joyce Fulton, Director of Communications for Bald Head Island Limited, says around 9 a.m. crews recovered the ferry Adventure without incurring damage to the vessel and without environmental impact. Fulton says the Adventure will make the trip upriver to Wilmington unassisted, under its own power. She says the boat should be hauled and dry-docked later today for a complete inspection.
While the name of the captain who was piloting the Adventure when it ran aground has not been released, Fulton did say he is not currently on the schedule for the ferries as the Coast Guard investigates. She could not, though, say if that would continue until the investigation is complete. The Coast Guard has said its probe could take months.
