Cumberland Co. site of annual free New Year’s meal

FAYETTEVILLE, NC (AP) — Thousands of people are expected to attend the 20th annual black-eyed pea dinner at the Cumberland County Crown Expo Center.

The Fayetteville Observer reported the free meal consists of foods typically eaten to start the new year, included black-eyed peas and collard greens. Also on the menu are chopped barbecue, candied yams, desert and coffee and tea.

The meal will be served from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Wednesday. The food and other expenses are paid by the event’s three hosts: Cumberland County Register of Deeds Lee Warren; Cumberland County District Attorney Billy West; and the county’s former top prosecutor, Ed Grannis.
