Former New Hanover commissioner Don Blake dies at 89

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Former New Hanover County Commissioner Donald Blake died Monday. He was 89.

According to his obituary, Blake died peacefully at Lower Cape Fear Hospice & LifeCareCenter.

A Wilmington native and Lieutenant Colonel in the US Army, who served in World War II for three years, Blake graduated from New Hanover High School and Wilmington College, which is now UNCW. Blake was the elected the college’s first student body president and helped found the school’s alumni association, for which he served as the first president.

The owner of a printing business, Blake was was elected to the New Hanover Commission in 1980. He served four years and was chairman in 1982. His obituary says one of his proudest accomplishments was serving as chair for the committee to preserve the old courthouse.

Blake served for ten years on the Board of Trustees for Cape Fear Community College and as chairman for his last two years. He also served on the New Hanover County Board of Health for a total 19 years, with numerous terms as chairman. As a member of the board of health he was responsible for spearheading adoption of a state law requiring that a clean plate must be used each time a diner returns to a buffet.

Blake is survived by his wife of 35 years, Cathey, three children, four grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren and other family.

Visitation is today from 4 until 6 p.m. at Andrews Mortuary on Market Street. The funeral service will be tomorrow at 2 p.m. at Scotts Hill Baptist Church, Scotts Hill Loop Road. Interment will follow at Sea Lawn Memorial Garden in Hampstead.
