Using technology to help with recession
The direction our economy could be heading is often compared to that of the great depression. One thing that sets this time period apart is our great advance in technology. The question is, how can we use technology like the internet to get us out of this recession?
“If I lose my job as a result of the recession, unlike in the 1930s for example, where probably you had to really struggle to find information about available jobs, well nowadays we can get on the internet. We can check blogs, we can get on Facebook, we can put out announcements to people, ‘hey I’m looking for work in such a such a field, do you have any ideas do you have any leads?’ and people who may even be strangers to us are going to respond,” said Dr. David Weber, a communication studies professor at UNCW
The internet is also a forum for people to vent about their financial struggles. “I think that the internet, if it can’t help us get out of the recession, it can certainly help us make more sense of the confusion and fear that surrounds us in this time of recession,” Dr. Weber added.
