NC plans business recruiting to be more like sales

AP Business Writer

RALEIGH, NC (AP) — Gov. Pat McCrory’s administration is moving to privatize parts of the public agency that woos companies and jobs to North Carolina, hoping to make business recruitment more effective.

The plan is removing responsibility for recruiting companies, tourists, sporting events and film producers from the state Commerce Department and assigning that to a nonprofit over the coming months.

State Commerce Secretary Sharon Decker says that would allow the people trying to sell North Carolina to operate without the contracting, salary and other limits that make state employees less nimble than company counterparts. Decker says business recruiters could receive bonuses for success and face firing when they fail, similar to other salesmen.

Critics say the changes risk making it harder to track public dollars used to entice executives and open new doors to cronyism.
