Cape Fear Pride Whiteville; History lesson one

Body

This month, Cape Fear Pride takes us to Whiteville. Each Wednesday, students from Central Middle School will give us a history lesson about the town.

Tonight we start with a tale that has two heads…. Here’s 8th grader Erika Williamson.

My report is on Mille and Christine McCoy. On July 11th, 1851 two young girls were born that would be without a doubt the most famous people in Columbus County history. Millie and Christine McCoy were born on a plantation in Welch’s Creek near Whiteville, North Carolina. Millie and Christine were conjoined twins bonded at the lower spine. At a young age the two were sold to travel in a road show. They were then kidnapped by a rival entertainer, but were soon tracked down by their original owner. Over the next few years they learned various talents, such as being fluent in five different languages, dancing, playing piano and most famously singing. The twins were often called the two-headed nightingale for their harmonious voices. One of the most famous fans was Queen Victoria, who they performed for in Buckingham Palace in the summer of 1871. She presented them with diamond hair clips. Millie and Christine died on the same plantation they were born on accept they had bought it. They died of Tuberculosis in October 1912. –Erika Williamson
