RALEIGH — Four members of the state’s congressional delegation are urging regulators to drop objections to a company’s mining expansion plans in eastern North Carolina.

The News & Observer of Raleigh reported Thursday the plan would result in the destruction of wetlands.

The newspaper said Sens. Richard Burr and Kay Hagan and Reps. Walter Jones and G.K. Butterfield wrote the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency in Atlanta about the expansion. The lawmakers expressed concern that the EPA might not accept PCS Phosphate’s plans.

The newspaper said Burr, Jones and Butterfield have received campaign contributions from the company’s political committee, its executives, or both.

PCS Phosphate wants federal permits to continue mining phosphate ore on the Pamlico River in Beaufort County for 30 more years.
