Time to prepare for tornado season
It’s Severe Weather Awareness Week in North Carolina, which is a chance to remind people that severe weather season is right around the corner, including the most likely time of year for tornadoes.
While tornadoes can occur year-round, they are most common in March, April and May.
Tornadoes can happen at any time of day, but are especially dangerous at night.
A recent study found that North Carolina had the greatest number of killer nighttime twisters in the United States.
Here are the scary statistics since 1950. 82% of tornado fatalities have occurred at night.
This is pretty amazing considering only 28% of all tornadoes touch down at night.
There are a number of reasons for this.
First, tornadoes are very hard to spot at night, even by trained weather spotters.
Second, people are less likely to get the warning because they are sleeping.
In addition, people are often in safer structures during the day. Schools and other commercial buildings are commonly made of steel or reinforced concrete structures.
Tornadoes can’t be prevented, but you can make sure one doesn’t catch you off guard by purchasing a NOAA weather radio is very important. It will alert you of a tornado warning 24 hours a day and will keep you informed even when you are asleep.
You can purchase NOAA weather radios online or in stores such as Radio Shack. They range in price from 30 to 80 dollars.
